Established in 1970, Corpus Christi Area Oil Spill Control Association was one of two dozen oil spill cleanup co-operatives established around the country at every major port. Studies at the time showed that a cooperative approach to owning equipment and being able to cascade resources to spill sites would be a cost effective way to respond to oil spills.
CCAOSCA was created to protect our community from accidental releases of hazardous substances and has responded to over 3,000 incidents in the past 52 years. What started as a very small organization, with one boat and 500 feet of containment boom has grown into a larger local co-op with 9 purpose built response boats and over 18,000 feet of containment boom and a host of skimming systems.
Funding for the organization comes from membership dues which fund a portion of the budget needed for operations and with the remaining budget made up from charges for cleanups, equipment rentals, maintenance and monitoring of sites.
CCAOSCA holds a USCG Oil Spill Response Organization (OSRO) rating and is also listed as a Texas General Land Office Discharge Cleanup Organization (DCO). This allows member companies to list our equipment and employees in their Facility Response Plans as “Contracted For” resources.
Membership dues are assessed by the Board of Directors every year and are assessed to companies as either a “large” company, or a “small” company. While membership dues have remained constant for the last ten years, they are slated to increase to a point that offers full funding of our operations.
